Slayer: Unholy Alliance European Tour Kick-Off

From Blabbermouth.net
California thrashers SLAYER kicked off the European "Unholy Alliance Tour: Chapter III" Monday night (October 27) at the Manchester Apollo in Manchester, England.
The group's setlist was as follows:

01. Flesh Storm- Probably the best song off the mostly disappointing “Christ Illusion”. Good opener. Sounds even better with the “Metal Storm” intro.

02. War Ensemble- Really, really bored of this song. Really bored of the “Tom Araya trying to be intense” intro. “This song is called “WAAARRRRR ENNNSAAAMMMMBBBLLLEE” This song should sit for a few tours.

03. Chemical Warfare- Classick SLAYER track, never gets old.

04. Ghosts of War- Fucking great! Standout track from the ‘South of Heaven’ LP and brought back to life on the US Marilyn Manson tour, glad to see it’s stuck around.

05. Disciple- I guess ‘God Hates Us All’ needs to be represented? One of the few decent tracks off this album. Played on every tour since the 2001 release of ‘GHUA’.

06. Cult- Eh. Standard Slayer post 1994 i.e. reminiscent of earlier material with the shouted, spoiled child vocals and even worse lyrics.

07. Dittohead- From my memory, this marks the first time Dave Lombardo is playing this track off 1994’s ‘Divine Intervention’. Killer song, amazing drumming. Middle of the set so hopefully they’re warmed up before tackling it.

08. Jihad- Eh.

09. South of Heaven- A Slayer classick. Great song, no doubt. A good middle of the road track for new recruits and die-hards alike, but again, maybe time for a breather. Sit this one and bring in “Behind The Crooked Cross”.

10. Seasons in the Abyss- Another returning staple. Kick-ass song, but a bit overused, sit this one and bring in “Temptation”. You know, medley’s are usually really, really lame. However I wouldn’t mind a ‘Seasons In The Abyss’ medley, there’s a lot of filler on that album, on stage is not the place to win someone over on sub par material.

11. Live Undead- KILLER! Would love to hear this on the ‘Unholy Alliance III’ in the US this Winter

12. Dead Skin Mask- It’s back. Is it me or is Slayer really leaning on the slower stuff for breathing room? “South”, “Seasons” and “Dead Skin Mask” are all relatively slower paced tracks. Maybe it’s first show of the tour precautionary measures? Regardless, like the song but would prefer something a bit deeper from the catalog.

13. Raining Blood- Classick, never gets old.
14. Angel of Death- Must be a new song? Never heard of it.

So to wrap up…nothing off of ‘Show No Mercy’ or ‘Hell Awaits’... though “Chemical Warfare” is from the era. Retired for the first time in 20 years is “Mandatory Suicide”, that’s a good thing. Three from ‘South of Heaven’, ‘Seasons In The Abyss’ and ‘Christ Illusion’, two from ‘Reign In Blood’ so on and so forth. The line-up for this tour is: Slayer, Trivium, Mastodon and Amon Amarth.
